Title:
Nottingham Market Place, 19th century
Creator:

Description:
This engraving shows the Market Place in the early 19th century. The Market Place was at the heart of commercial life in Nottingham. Around it were leading shops that provided a wide range of goods and services. The large building in the centre is The Exchange, a large building that housed, on the ground floor, many 'stalls' that sold everything from meat to household goods, and above it were the offices of the Corporation. It was here that the aldermen and Mayor met to make decisions on running the town's affairs. Chandler's Lane, where George Africanus lived, was just behind The Exchange.
