Description:

Watch and Ward registers were compiled by borough officials in 1812 and 1816. The 1816 register records George as a 'lab' (labourer), aged 55 and living on Chandlers Lane. Following Luddite riots in 1811 the borough compiled lists of residents who would be obliged to help keep the peace by 'watching and warding' - looking out for trouble! The Luddites were gangs of frameworkknitters who occasionally broke into the homes or workshops of hosiers they believed had caused them to be unemployed or who were lowering their wages. They sometimes damaged the hosiers' frames, often in the name of a mythical Ned Ludd, who was said to live in Sherwood Forest, rather like Robin Hood. The frames were worked to produce hose (stocks and stockings).
