Key Stage 2 History

Learning Objectives:

  • select information from historical sources
  • know what foods were available during WWII
  • understand why rationing was necessary during WWII

Suggested Activity:

  1. Pupils use a selection of archive items to complete Worksheet 1.1 (36 kb) [doc]
  2. Discussion: Why were there food shortages? Why was rationing introduced? How did rationing work? How did people supplement their rations?
  3. Extension: Study The black market in Nottingham. Was rationing fair?
  4. Pupils could design a government leaflet that explains why rationing has been introduced and how it will work.

Key Stage 2 Literacy

Learning Objectives

  • know the key features of an instructional text

Suggested Activity:

  1. Study Wartime Cookery Book
  2. Discussion: What are the features of this piece of writing?
  3. Pupils could design and write their own (equally gross!) recipe.

Key Stage 2 Science

Learning Objectives

  • select information from historical sources
  • understand what constitutes a healthy diet

1. Suggested Activity:

  1. Pupils use a selection of archive items to produce a collage that shows the typical foods eaten by children during WWII.
  2. Discussion: What foods were eaten lots? What foods were there shortages of? How does the WWII diet compare to today? Which diet is healthier?
  3. Pupils could design a poster / leaflet to promote healthy eating.
