Emsource: an East Midlands resource for teachers and learners

Using archives for learning

A model for developing archive learning materials

These notes are from a presentation given at an INSET day held in June 2003.

Speaker: Helen Ward, MLA East Midlands

Model

Montage of WWII items

  1. Identify your nearest Record Office. These can be found using the Archon Directory
  2. Find out about the holdings of your local Record Office, using their leaflets and websites. A2A (Access to Archives) is a national initiative that provides online access to some catalogues.
  3. Audit existing Schemes of Work and identify potential areas where archive material could be incorporated.
  4. Look at existing archive teaching and learning materials for ideas and inspiration. The Learning Curve, an extensive education website run by the National Archives may be a useful starting point.
  5. Contact your Record Office and talk to staff about your ideas. They will be able to provide feedback on which ideas are viable and suggest ways that you can move forward.
  6. Develop teaching and learning materials. Trial and adapt accordingly.
  7. Incorporate into Schemes of Work.

REMEMBER! This will not happen overnight! It takes time, and it is therefore realistic to allow at least an academic year to develop materials.
