The Stockholm Conference also marked the creation of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

“The idea of World Environment Day originated 50 years ago at the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm. It grew out of the understanding that we must stand up to protect the environment. air, land and water, on which we all depend,” said Inger Andersen, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme, in a message on the occasion. of World Environment Day 2022.

Since 1974, World Environment Day has been celebrated annually and has become an important platform for promoting progress on the environmental dimensions of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Led by UNEP, more than 150 countries participate in the events each year. Major corporations, non-governmental organizations, communities, governments and celebrities around the world come together under one banner to champion environmental causes.

World Environment Day 2022 host country: Sweden

World Environment Day is held every year in a different country where celebrations and meetings take place. The host country this year is Sweden. A high-level international meeting will be organized this year with the support of UNEP and partners.

The meeting is entitled “Stockholm+50: a healthy planet for prosperity for all – our responsibility, our opportunity”. It will be held on June 2 and 3, 2022. The most pressing environmental issues will be highlighted through the events.
