The Environmental Wing of the Territorial Army Battalion of the Southern Command has planted more than a million saplings in and around Pune in less than a year as part of its reforestation initiative, the Command said on Saturday. on the occasion of World Environment Day.
The Pune-based command launched the initiative last August with a target of planting over 1.5 lakh saplings in the area.
In addition, the 136 Territorial (Ecological) Army Battalion has already planted more than 50,000 seed balls on a 1 lakh target in Pune to help add greenery to the city as well as its surroundings, said added the command.
The campaign will see the reforestation of around 100 hectares of land in various locations, helping to convert them into green areas, he added.
The areas where these activities have already been carried out are the Bombay Engineering Group at Dighi, the College of Military Engineering (CME) at Khadki, the National Defense Academy (NDA) at Khadakwasla, the Central Ordnance Depot at Dehu Road and the military station in ‘Aundh. . The initiative also includes the creation of a 2,500 square meter water feature with a capacity to store 12.2 lakh liters of rainwater.
Planting work will continue during the current monsoon season, the command said.

Environment Day Celebrations at INS Shivaji
