Zulal Wellness Resort celebrates World Environment Day

* Launch of the mangrove conservation program in northern Qatar

Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som marked World Environment Day celebrations and unveiled its “unique environmental initiatives that are shaping the sustainable future of the regional hospitality industry”.
“In line with this mission, Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som presents its plans to stimulate local ecosystems and raise environmental awareness among its guests and the Qatari community with the launch of its mangrove conservation program in northern Qatar,” according to A press release.
Implemented in partnership with resort developer, Msheireb Properties, Qatar’s leading sustainable property developer, the on-site mangrove conservation program aims to protect local marine life.
Maryam Sultan al-Jassim, Head of Communications and Public Relations, Msheireb Properties said, “Msheireb Properties is proud to have this partnership with Zulal Wellness Resort to raise awareness on very important and critical topics in Qatar. Mangroves are a main component of our natural beauty and it is our responsibility to be part of the national effort to preserve them. This clearly reflects our vision to protect our environment and adhere to best sustainability practices in all our developments. The new program will have a positive impact on our community and complements our long-term strategy to preserve our natural resources for generations to come.
For the first time in Qatar, guests will be offered the opportunity to plant mangroves to mark their visits and be part of this initiative. The program will also involve Zulal employees, partners and stakeholders, becoming a true community initiative, the statement added.
Commenting on the resort’s approach to sustainability, Zulal Wellness Resort General Manager Daniele Vastolo said, “Sustainability is at the heart of Zulal Wellness Resort’s mission, and we are deeply committed to preserving and developing local ecosystems and raise awareness of biodiversity and environmental management. With the mangrove planting site located close to the resort, this initiative will help improve air quality and create a favorable environment for local wildlife and boost species diversity. It will also be a unique and eco-friendly customer experience, promoting mangrove conservation and creating a new ecotourism attraction in Qatar.”
Zulal Wellness Resort’s mangrove conservation program is also part of the resort’s broader sustainability policy and will be combined with other initiatives including beach cleanups, implementing sustainable practices and using products that respect the environment and are of local origin. In line with the Qatar National Vision 2030 which emphasizes the importance of environmental stewardship, as well as Goals 1 and 2 of the Qatar National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan 2015- 2025, aimed at increasing public awareness and participation in biodiversity conservation, the Zulal Mangrove Conservation Initiative will also contribute to United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14 (UNSDG), urging to “conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development”.
A cornerstone of marine biodiversity, mangroves provide feeding and nesting habitats for many species of birds, fish, crustaceans and other ecologically and commercially important organisms.
Mangroves are of capital importance for local ecosystems, but also for populations. Providing natural infrastructure and protecting nearby areas by preventing erosion and absorbing the impacts of storm surges during extreme weather events, they also support the livelihoods of local communities through fishing and ecotourism, as an estimated 80% of the world’s fish catch depends on mangrove forests in some form. or another.
